The next long weekend for most Canadians is the August long weekend. The August long weekend across most of Canada typically falls on the first Monday of the month. That means that many Canadians across the country will enjoy Monday, August 5, 2024 as a holiday.
In some parts of Canada, the day is described as a Civic Holiday. In some provinces, the day is used to celebrate the province itself. For example, in BC, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan, the day is known as British Columbia Day, New Brunswick Day and Saskatchewan Day, respectively. In Alberta, the holiday is known as Heritage Day. In Manitoba, the day is known as Terry Fox Day. In Nova Scotia, the day is known as Natal Day. For many across the country, the weekend is simply known as August long.
Do All Provinces Have an August Long Weekend in Canada?
The first Monday in August is not observed as a holiday in Quebec, parts of Newfoundland and Labrador, or Yukon. Rather, people in Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador and Yukon observe other important days in those provinces, that are not considered holidays in the rest of Canada. For example:
- Quebec observes Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day in June.
- Yukon observes Discovery Day on the third Monday of August. In 2024, Yukon will observe Discovery Day on August 19, 2024
- Newfoundland and Labrador also observes Discovery Day in June. However, some municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador take a holiday on the first Monday in August, but that is not necessarily the case throughout the province.
Is Regatta Day a civic holiday in Newfoundland and Labrador?
The Royal St. John’s Regatta or Regatta Day is actually observed in St. John’s on the first Wednesday in August. This day is observed as a holiday in St. John’s, although other municipalities may give their employees a day off if they choose to do so.
In 2024, the Royal St. John’s Regatta will take place on August 21, 2024, which means that this is a holiday in St. John’s.
In 2025, to accommodate the Canada Summer Games, the Regatta is scheduled to take place in July rather than in August. The 2025 Regatta will take place on the last Wednesday of July rather than the third Wednesday of August. In 2025, therefore, Regatta will take place on July 30, 2025, which is also a holiday in St. John’s.
September Long Weekend 2024
For many, the turn of the calendar to September is bittersweet. As kids head back to school and summer holidays for many families come to an end, September is often seen as the last month before the mad rush towards the holiday season. Fortunately for many, September starts with the Labour Day long weekend. This year, Labour Day falls on September 2, 2024 and is observed across the country as a national holiday.
