CPP Disability Payments 2024

The CPP disability benefit is a monthly benefit that is intended to provide financial assistance to vulnerable Canadians. It is paid to individuals suffering from a long-term mental or physical disability which prevents the person from doing any type of substantially gainful work. For the purposes of eligibility, “work” includes paid work, volunteer activities, educational activities, or any combination of these activities. To be eligible, the individual must have made sufficient contributions into the CPP during their working years. CPP disability benefits are only paid until a person turn 65 years of age.

Does An Inheritance Affect CPP Disability Benefits?

Receiving an inheritance does not affect CPP disability benefits. Eligibility for CPP disability benefits is based on the person’s age, prior contributions into CPP, and inability to work because of a severe and prolonged mental or physical disability. Keep in mind, however, that a person’s eligibility to receive disability benefits can be reassessed periodically and a person may be asked to provide current medical and other information to prove eligibility.

Are CPP Disability Benefits Taxable Income?

CPP Disability payments are taxable income. Taxes are not withheld automatically unless you specifically request that federal income tax be deducted from your monthly payment. If such a request is not made, you will need to pay income tax when due.
